My Fashion Style

Fashion has always been part os my life. Today I would describe my style as elegant, clean, minimal. I love luxurious fabrics and muted colors……always muted. Almost always I will dress monochromatic. A look into my closets will reveal lots of black, white and ivory, beige and gray. Not just any of those colors but certain versions of them. For instance, not a cool gray sweater but a warm shade.

You will see almost no sign of a print. I own one one flowy skirt from a favorite designer in a print.

How does this discussion of fashion belong on my website about “art”. Because I am a fiber artist who works with fabric and fashion design elements. Look at my portfolio and an overall description would be the same as a description of my closet.

Many items have something a little unexpected like asymmetrical hems, raw edges, elongated collars, and a touch (detail) that adds a bit of complexity.

The one piece of style advice I would share would be get to know your body. If you don’t feel good in something – trendy or otherwise – pay attention. It’s your inner voice speaking to you. The same ideas relate to creating art; if it feels good, go with it. If it feels trendy or cliche, move on to another idea. While I don’t follow trends, I keep up with the general flow of fashion so I look up to date. It’s most important to wear something that works for you, your energy and your body. That will make you feel confident and that’s far more interesting to me than if everyone else is doing it.

Sustainability is something I think about more and more. In the past year, I’ve purchased more second-hand items than new – a lot from The Real Real – and I sell pieces from my closet to give the lesser used items a new home. I like buying pieces made using recycled fabrics and overall I’ve tried to reduce my intake. I’ve started to reach into the back of my closet to pull out older pieces and style them up to prove to my audience you can give old pieces a new lease of life. Another way of saying it is “I shop in my closet”.

FAVORITE LABEL: The Row……no question! Every other brand comes in at a far second. I collect their Canal Flat. I have three, yes three Margaux bags and many others styles from crossbody styles to totes. . (Did I mention that I am a bit of a collector?) When I find something that works in my wardrobe, I have to have multiples. I have five The Row black jackets, all different styles and weights. The word “uniform” resonates with me.

The secret to great style comes from within. Don’t second guess yourself, know what suits you, and be open to new ideas – but not to the point of ignoring your own personal style. Confident people just carry themselves differently.
